In
1920, Paul Roux set up a "cafe" called "le
Robinson",
the sign of which indicated that eveyone was welcome. Odd-looking men
kept arriving by a "street-car"
that commuted from Cagnes to Vence, carrying drawing notebooks, wooden
paint boxes, sometimes canvases, and occasionally a portable easel.
These painters were named Matisse, Signac, Renoir, Duffy, Valloton,
Derain, Soutine... and they became habitués
of the hospitable cafe. In 1932, Paul Roux turned his "Cafe Robinson"
into an "Inn and changed its name to the "Colombe
d'Or".
Since then, as years and events went by, the "Colombe d'Or" has become
a true museum, a witness to the artistic revolution of our century...
Its rooms still preserve the aura of the many famous people who
stayed there... nowadays, visiting there remains a "must" for
celebrities of all backgrounds.
