Saint-Paul de Vence
From the "boule game to the "Pétanque"
"When a Boule game begins, the village comes to life." Marcel Pagnol
The petanque!!! This typical sport from Marseilles gathers people from all ages and horizons. It is a very friendly and popular activity that can be played everywhere... in the garden, in the country-side, on the squares, in the back-yards of French cafes.... and more particularly in St Paul de Vence, where everybody remembers the unforgettable games performed by celebrities such as Fernandel, Yves Montand, Lino Ventura...
The word " petanque" appeared about 100 years ago in La Ciotat (South of France) and comes from "pieds tanques", which means " not moving the feet" inside a circle drawn on the ground by the players.
The games often lead to a lot of excitement... punctuated with a great deal of exclamations and sometimes fussy arguments... but decency prevents me from translating them.
However, I invite you to come and discover this very authentic and entertaining activity.
13 to null ? "Fanny" ? Let's meet at the Café de la Place!
