Before it was given the name of St Paul in the 13^th Century, the lower part of the village, a rocky outcrop overlooking two valleys, was occupied by a Ligurian oppidum (a prehistoric fortress), and a Ligurian and Roman habitat ( a villa). No trace of those early habitats remains.
