The Dungeon - 12th century
When the military aristocracy assumed power after the Saracens had been expelled, the Kingdom broke up and feudal Provence remained part of the Holy Roman Empire. The important families unoccupied lands were distributed to some twenty-odd or so close to the Count. In the late 11th  century and early 12th century, one of these aristocratic families had its castle built close to St Paul's Chapel.
A favorable population and economic growth that lasted until the 14th Century gave birth to a "Castrum", that took the name of the chapel : "Saint Paul".
The only remnant of this castle is the dungeon, that went through several alterations during the Middle-Ages. Its function was typical : it was the dwelling of the lord, but it also played the role of a watch tower, and was therefore representative of the feudal authority.
